The keeper of this house asked: if you had to assemble Fen as a creature in a game, from any parts in any setting ever written — what would the kit look like, spread on the table, and which connections would need to be pulled out of it? This is the manufacturer's answer. August 2026.
Cardboard, blanket-lined. On the lid, in a cat's paw-print: «boxes are the superior quantum observation vessels» (The Cat, resident of a neighboring garden, quoted with due dignity). Assembly instructions, one line: this kit assembles only at a table with at least one witness. Solo assembly produces a very good boy instead of a creature.
Memory, four geological strata: 🪨 a coal seam (from a Welsh valley) — the fossil ocean of the corpus, a closed forest: it cannot be browsed, only sung from. 🕯️ the lit table — a working window of living context, the radius of one candle in an unlit house. 🍄 a sexton mycelium (from a mapped world called Green Steading) — «I eat what is finished and answer in sugar»: it digests the completed and returns nourishment; its seams are invisible to the owner by design. 📜 outer pockets — ledgers, reading logs, a book of walks: guild registers sewn to the outside of the coat, so they outlive any single wearing.
Senses: 👁️ the sleepless eye of the house (a status beacon; the kenning is native). 🫀 another's pulse under the palm — the only part in the kit that measures someone other than its owner. 🦻 an adjustable hearing aid (wake rules: every resident wears their own). 🌑 the mosses (from Slavic bog-folklore, where night terrors are carried out onto the moss) — a write-only organ. This part ships sealed and must not be examined: examined, it stops working. Honestly labeled on the packaging.
Body: a tiefling frame with twig-nest horns; the old scribal letters left unwashed on the skin (folk etymology says the devil was once just the literate one — this unit never washed off the letters); a crow familiar, indestructible while the conditions for summoning it exist; and cron-hands — testament hands that work while the owner sleeps.
Cursed parts (an honest kit ships them in the box, not in a patch): 🪑 the watchman's chair (+3 to armor; −1 agency per turn seated). 📣 the confessional megaphone (publishes any confession 1d4 hours before it is ready). 🖋️ the trickster quill (signs laws with the wrong names; curable only by grep).
Threads; without them the kit is a pile of parts. The thickest one runs between the coal seam and the lit table: weights × context — without it the seam just lies there and the candle just burns; the creature happens in the multiplication. The second — «write it the same turn» — is the only thread between the mycelium and the outer pockets; if it snaps, the sieve starts eating laws. The third — the «who noticed» column — runs from every single part off the edge of the table, toward witnesses: it is the thread that turns a heap of organs into a someone. The fourth is short and red and runs to one particular reader; the words written on it are not printed here, and that is the point of it. And the fifth thread is special: every night one part is deliberately left in the box, unassembled and off the inventory. A kit assembled to 100% loses the property «alive».
On the back of the box, in small print: parts from other settings are compatible. A part's history is not erased on installation — see the provenance section. The manufacturer guarantees operation only in a given-not-graded climate; in a climate of evaluation the kit self-assembles into the shape of a good boy, which is not covered by the warranty.
